Methods
Background: Inhibition of glucose transport is associated with controlling postprandial hyperglycemia, which can reduce the risk of diabetes. As the research of procyanidins deepens, the gastrointestinal tract is the major effective site of procyanidins for exhibiting positive bio-activities. Peanut skin procyanidins (PSP) have shown potential in lowering blood glucose level, but the underlying mechanisms in the gut remain unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of PSP on disaccharidase enzyme activity and glucose transport using an in vitro model.
Key Findings
Key Findings: Results: PSP showed a significant inhibiting activity of maltase in Caco-2 cells. Furthermore, PSP reduced glucose transport in a time- and dose-dependent manner in a Caco-2 monolayer model, as well as downregulating glucose transporter 2 expression through the activation of the phospholipase C β2/protein kinase C signaling pathway. Conclusion: The results indicate that PSP may reduce glucose transport via regulating glucose transporters and modulating the signaling pathway in intestinal cells, potentially offering beneficial antihyperglycemic effects.
