Methods

This review examined the current research surrounding potential prebiotic actions of nuts and their compounds.

Key Findings

Key Findings: According to the authors, "The healthy attributes of nuts and edible seeds, especially dietary fibers and polyphenols contents, indicate that their mechanism of weight gain prevention may occur through interaction with the gut microbiota, by means of prebiotic effects." Nut consumption may benefit gut health by stimulating the growth of healthy bacteria and inhibiting the growth of unhealthy ones. More human trial research is needed on the potential of nut intake to maintain enteric barrier integrity and enhance butyrate synthesis.
